Organised by the municipality of Crèvecœur-le-Grand in partnership with the Hauts-de-France Region, the Communauté de Communes de l'Oise Picarde and our Association, this ceremony in memory of the Canadian and British crew of Halifax LV 915, RAF 78 Squadron, took place near the crash site, on the edge of the D930 road.
Large black clouds were gathering in the distance and the wind direction did not bode well for the minutes to come. The ceremony had barely begun when a veritable deluge began to fall.
The torrential rain disrupted the ceremony somewhat, but despite this, Mr Aymeric Bourleau, mayor of the town, recounted the history of the aircraft that crashed on the night of 12 to 13 June 1944 and the tragic fate of its seven crew members.
The memorial stone was then unveiled.
Wreaths were laid, followed by a minute's silence and the Canadian, British and French national anthems.
All those present were then invited to take shelter at the town hall of Crèvecœur-le-Grand to share a drink.
An exhibition retracing the missions of the Short Stirling and Halifax aircraft that crashed near the town was presented, along with photos of the crew members.
